Bio
The J. Mack Robinson Distinguished Professor of Information Systems at Georgia State University, Detmar studies international IT, computer security, Net-enhanced organizations (e-Commerce), and IS research methods. Over the years, Dr. Detmar Straub has been studying the differential effects of culture on the use of information systems by organizations. His work has been documenting the ways in which culture can both encourage and inhibit use. He has studied these effects throughout the Arab world (but with particular emphasis on Egypt) as well as in Finland, Switzerland, Brazil, South Africa, and Japan. In the fall of 2009, he began publishing his findings on the effects of cultural chronism on responsiveness to computer systems. Some cultures are said to be mono-chronic in that individuals in these cultures process information serially and accordingly are, it is posited, more irritated by long download delays on Web pages. A prolific publisher, Detmar has over 150 publications in journals such as MIS Quarterly, Journal of International Management, Management Science, Organization Science, Information Systems Research, Journal of Management Information Systems, the Sloan Management Review, and a host of other top journals. Detmar is currently Editor-in-Chief of MIS Quarterly and Associate Editor for the Journal of International Management. He is the recipient of the Alumni Distinguished Professor Award at Georgia State University (2008), an award given to the faculty member in a 1,000 plus member faculty with the highest achievements in research, teaching, and service.
